Public relations have been a huge help to organisations, especially in creating a favorable image and establishing a good relationship between consumers and the brand. While it is often regarded as free advertising, PR is a costless type of promotion with a timeless effect if done right. There is no book of rules when it comes to enhancing a brand's image. The rule of thumb is to implement an effective strategy that starts with gauging what the company really wants.

Before you get started with your PR campaign strategy, get to know these 5 key elements of good public relations.

1. Identify your target audience

In grooming a brand's public image, a PR agency needs to know the target audience first. What may work for one audience may not work for others, so it is important that you know who you are targeting. Take time to do your research so you will know who your ideal customers are. Tailoring a PR campaign around an unknown audience can be a challenging feat. There is no general audience in public relations. You have to segment them according to their interest and needs.

With substantial research, you will be able to know the right people you should target. In giving useful information to your audience, knowing what their day-to-day objectives are is important because it will allow you to pinpoint the information you should include in your stories. Even the demographics matter since men and women are categorised based on their preference, age, affiliation and many others.

2. Be realistic

Like any campaigns, efforts will not take shape overnight. This is why having a clear and realistic vision what your strategy wants to accomplish is essential. It is not about the "what' but the "how" that will lead you to you succeeding in your campaign. While everyone wants to reach more audience, knowing how you will be able to accomplish it is the most crucial aspect in creating an action plan.

The key to a successful PR plan strategy is prioritising quality over quantity. The target audience might be limited but you can generate interest in these outlets compared to getting more audiences and not receiving any boost in sales. Quantity does not always translate into sales.

3. Create a unique message

The key messages that you send out to your audience are the foundation of public relations. Not only do they ensure consistency but also help the audience perceive your products and services. When creating a message, be sure to focus on one key message that will resonate with your brand's mission and vision. It should also be short and concise so your audience can easily remember what your brand believes in.

Avoid using jargons because it will defeat the purpose of staying relevant to your audience once they find your message hard to understand. Gather as much information as you can so you can craft a message that the audience can easily identify your brand with.

4. Be aware of your competition

Staying ahead of your competition requires knowing everything about your biggest threats. Find out what they are doing and monitor their public relations strategy. If you notice your competition lacking in some key areas, it is an opportunity for you to fill the large gap. However, you should keep in mind that instead of replicating the PR strategy of your competition, you should consider improving your own.

You will never know what aspect of your strategy you need to improve on if you do not know who your competitors are. Regardless of the business you are in, facing competition is inevitable. Whether it is a competitor offering similar products or better rates, you need to be on the lookout for these competitors. You should understand their approach in doing PR, how much they charge, how they build a brand and much more.

5. Be relevant

With competition getting stiffer and stiffer, keeping up with trends is a must, especially in the digital age. Be sure to experiment with various social media platforms and find out how your target audience is responding. Don't focus on viral crazes and go for long-term trends. As part of your public relations strategy, you have to create buzz as much as possible so your audience will not forget about your brand. One example is pitching press releases to stay top-of-mind.

Explore possible options that can promote a brand. Your unique and creative ideas might just be all you need to leverage your PR efforts.

Public relations are not just about building a name for your brand but also connecting with your audience. People can easily remember your brand but it takes a consistent and strong PR strategy for your audience to maintain relevance. Always know the pulse of your audience and never stop thinking outside the box.
