Carmen Jones by Oscar Hammerstein directed by Jonathan Eaton
November 17-18, 2006 Byham Theater 8:00 pm
Revolutionary musical theater . . . the best of Broadway meets the best of opera: Carmen Jones is Hammerstein’s hugely popular re-working of the Bizet’s Carmen. Set in the south of America following World War II and using a revolutionary all-African American cast, this Broadway opera is an instant hit. Parachute maker Carmen Jones starts out ruthless and is turned into a splendid, ultimately sexy heroine. She makes a play for a soldier named Joe, who is in love with sweet Cindy Lou. When she goes after him, her untamed love and his destructive passion end in tragedy.
